It's been HOT...very, very HOT here in the NYC area. It's hot just getting the mail, let alone trying to do any type of physical activity! After a wonderful trip to New Orleans this past week (and a couple of triple digit runs) I was quite content to run in 90 degrees this afternoon.
Here are some of the things I've been doing to keep exercise enjoyable in these heatwaves:
- Go out early or late in the day
- Keep well hydrated drinking at least 8-10 8 oz glasses of water every single day
- If I'm just not up for it, head indoors, there's nothing wrong with hitting the eliptical, treadmill, cardio class, pool, or even do a deep water pool run (that's been a favorite of mine this summer with my friend Monica)
- Dress cool (no-not jimmy choo's people--I'm talking heatgear by Under Armour--no, they don't pay me, I'm just a huge fan of their stuff...while I'm at it, I'll tell you I love Maia bras by Moving Comfort & underwear by shock absorber)
- Wear a hat, preferably light-colored that's is made for running
- Partake in appropriate eating: bananas, bananas & more bananas--the best before and after run food known to woman
- Salt--contrary to most dietary recommendations, runners need salt in their diets--now I'm not recommending tons of extra salt, but you may not need to be on that low-sodium diet (check with your doctor of course)
- If possible carry a waist pack with water or have a mid-run water break--feel free to pour a bit over your head to cool off...if all else fails I'm always happy to run through a sprinkler or two along the way!
What are some of your tips for running in the heat???

If I don't feel good about the humidity, I make it a point that I don't move too much, literally.

I agree that some words that simply does not make sense, but hey, look at it this way ... at least your child learn more how the words before his time. I do not think it's a waste of money. If it was not a gift, I paid for it.

Today I was at the shopping mall and I spent a lot of time reading the Father’s Day cards. They all had a special message that in some way or another reflected how I feel about you. Yet as I selected and read, and selected and read again, it occurred to me that not a single card said what I really want to say to you.

I must admit I didn't think Toy Story 3 would be worth the wait but I think the movie delivered. Very good movie and a touching ending that even made me tear up.. just a tiny bit. :)

It's true that we don't know what we've got until we lose it, but it's also true that we don't know what we've been missing until it arrives.

Running in a humid temperature helps us sweat faster and burn more calories. But we must be wary of heatstroke.

There's always the threat of heatstroke, yes, but the healthy benefits in running is far more in number.

Aside from the tips that you have mentioned above, I also mix some salt with my cold juice before a run. This keeps me from losing sodium in my body.
